One of the cool things about going on a vacation is the chance to see things that you don't normally take the time to see. We took our vacation to Tennessee, and spent a good part of the time going through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There's a lot to see there, and, living in Washington we don't get to see it very often.
While we were in the Smoky's we visited Cades Cove. There's an old mountain community there that's been well preserved, except for the depredations of tourists who were armed with penknives and marking pens. If you can see past the graffiti left by these vandals, there's a lot of our nation's history to see.
While we were walking through the graveyard behind the Primitive Baptist Church in Cades Cove we chanced upon a pair of white tailed deer that were grazing there. Naturally, being a true tourist (and not a vandal) I had my camera and my video camera with me.
Tennessee has had a rather unusual year as far as the weather is concerned. Spring came at the usual time, and the plants awoke as they usually do. Unfortunately there was an unseasonable hard freeze that devastated most of the plants, killing the new growth. A lot of the plants were slow to recover.
The summer has been unusual too, with hotter, drier weather than has been seen in 50 years according to some of the locals. That appears to have made things a bit hard on the deer. If you look closely in the following video, you'll be able to see that this deer could stand to pack on a couple of pounds…
