“Our God given unalienable rights are given to us all as individuals. They tell us what we may do for ourselves, and they are the embodiment of liberty.
The so-called rights that government gives to some of us are parcelled out to select groups as classes. They tell us what one class of people may require another to do for them, and they are the very essence of slavery.”— Perri Nelson, February 9, 2010

We've decided to home-school our son this year. This wasn't a decision we arrived at lightly.
Lucas has done fairly well in the public school system until this last year. When he left Cedar Valley to go to Cedar Heights there was a dramatic change.
Many parents we've talked to have seen the same sort of change as their children move from Cedar Valley to Cedar Heights. We also saw this when our older son made the transition.
It appears that there's an unusual discipline problem at the school. Students that do well quickly learn that they are "marked" by other students as "geeks" and "outsiders". They are ostracized and bullied.
Some students have a tendency to simply give up in the face of this, and others manage to succeed. Rather than see this turn out badly for Lucas we've decided to enroll him in the Washington Virtual Academy.
Perhaps this will give him a leg up on life. One thing's for certain though. We will have much more control over our son's education, and we'll be able to monitor his progress much more closely.
