For those we lost, We will not forget 09/11/2001 “Our God given unalienable rights are given to us all as individuals. They tell us what we may do for ourselves, and they are the embodiment of liberty. The so-called rights that government gives to some of us are parcelled out to select groups as classes. They tell us what one class of people may require another to do for them, and they are the very essence of slavery.”

Last minute rush

Published Fri, Nov 27 2009 10:07 AM

Today I’m doing those last minute things I’ve been putting off for altogether too long. Tomorrow I leave for Salt Lake City, bright and early in the morning. I’ll stop somewhere along the way tomorrow night, and make the final push on Sunday. I expect to be in Salt Lake around 6:00PM give or take an hour either way. Monday morning I start work on my new contract with Goldman-Sachs.

I never did get finished with the work I wanted to do on my Corvette. I got to the point where all I have to do is take off the rotor, drill out the old caliper bolt, put the rotor back and replace the caliper. The blasted rotor just doesn’t want to come off. I haven’t really had a long enough stretch of good weather to finish the job – and besides, I was feeling somewhat ambivalent about taking this car through possible snow and ice and winter driving anyway. So, I’m putting it back in the garage.

I’ll be back home on Christmas Eve – but I’m leaving to return to Salt Lake just a couple of days later. If I can I’ll get the rotor off the day after Christmas and finish the work on it. Then I’ll give the car a shakedown before I have to go back to Salt Lake.  After that it will be a while before I get back to drive the car, but hopefully this summer I’ll have a few days to drive it.

In the meantime I took the PT Cruiser to the tire store and had some studded snow tires put on it. For some reason nobody will sell chains for it, not even those flexible cable chains. They all keep muttering something about insufficient clearance. Ah well, that’s the way it goes. The PT Cruiser needs brakes too. They wanted to charge me over $60 just for the pads, and another $70 for the labor!  I found brake pads for just under $25 and I can change them myself so I’m doing it this morning. I’ve done the brakes on the PT Cruiser several times before, so it won’t be anything like the trouble the Corvette is giving me.

The job in Salt Lake with Goldman Sachs is a contract software engineering job. They wanted me to work “corp. to corp.” and so I went through the process to set up an LLC. I’ll be transferring ownership of my domain name to the LLC sometime soon – and this web site will become the official web site and blog of “PERRI NELSON SOFTWARE LLC”. This blog will remain at the same URL, but I’ll be adding a company related sub-site where I’ll post products and outline the services I’ll provide. All I’m waiting for there is for the city to finish processing my business license application. Once that’s done I’ll start work on the sub-site and rebrand my electro-mechanical computer simulation.

Tonight I’ll be tearing down my computer equipment and packing it away in the car. That means no more blogging or visiting blogs until I get set up in Salt Lake. I’ll be back online Sunday night, but probably won’t post anything new until at least Monday after I get “home” from work.

One of the good things about driving the PT Cruiser down to Salt Lake instead of the Corvette is the additional cargo capacity. So in addition to clothes and my computer I will have room for books and other stuff. All of my software engineering books are going with me, along with some historical references. So are all of my Gaelic language resources and my cameras. The cameras will be sitting next to me in the front seat so I can take a few pictures from the road. I’ll post some when I resume blogging next week.

Good luck with the new gig. I hope the time goes by quickly for you and you have ample opportunities to get back home now and then. Even more, I hope by the time it's all said and done, a Republican controlled Congress will bring some fiscal common sense to Washington that will bring about market expansion so that leaving home to support the family won't be necessary.

On my end, the going is still rough. Still don't know if my unemployment benefits will be re-instated whilst the job search goes on. If it doesn't, I'll be forced to take some truly lame gigs just to have insurance costs reduced. So it's looking right now as if the choice is, stay home but make very low wages or take an OTR gig and never be home, while hoping that six months or one year is all the experience I'll need to get a local gig. Rock, meet Hard Place. I will perservere.

Everything is packed except the last load of laundry which is in the dryer, and the usual toiletries which I'll pack after my morning ablutions. The computer is dismantled and stowed in the car (I'm using my wife's machine for this).

Fixing the brakes took me a bit longer than I expected, only because I had to do it twice. The first time I put both sets of outer pads on the same wheel, so I had to undo it and do it right. Bleeding the brakes was trivial. I think I'm good to go. First thing in the morning it's off to the bank, the gast station, and then I'll put my destination into the navigation unit and hit the road.

I'll be without email or internet service until I arrive in Salt Lake City. Type at you all Monday after work!

You know, having plenty of cargo space makes it worth driving an ugly car. *lol* (Yeh, yeh, tastes vary :-))

I certainly hope your gig is both profitable and enjoyable.
