“Our God given unalienable rights are given to us all as individuals. They tell us what we may do for ourselves, and they are the embodiment of liberty.
The so-called rights that government gives to some of us are parcelled out to select groups as classes. They tell us what one class of people may require another to do for them, and they are the very essence of slavery.”— Perri Nelson, February 9, 2010

False advertising

It’s an outrage when a business engages in deceptive marketing tactics to inflate its profits. It’s so outrageous that the federal government has even dedicated a part of its bureaucracy to looking at claims of false advertising and punishing the companies that engage in it.
On the other hand, I guess we should expect misinformation from our government. Take for example the following road sign…
A person seeing this sign as they were travelling down the highway would expect to find a recreation area about four miles down the road if they took the next left. That’s certainly what I expected anyway. How naive of me… There’s no such place. I know, because I went looking for it.
After travelling the indicated road to its end, there was no sign of the promised recreation area. There was a one lane bridge about five miles down the road that traversed the gorge, but nowhere near the bridge was there anyplace to legally park. Thinking I had somehow missed the advertised location, I looped back and tried again. Like the fool that goes to see the same movie twice expecting a different result the second time around I was again disappointed. This time though, after travelling the advertised distance, I took a different turn. Several miles further down the road I came to Cumberland, and then to Kanaskat-Palmer state park…
At the park I asked about the “Green River Gorge” recreation area. The ranger there was totally unfamiliar with it, although she was familiar with the sign. Still, the Green River did flow through the park, and so I went to the day use area and parked. Lucas and I took a short hike down to the river for some relaxation… And I took some pictures.
The stones in the river were quite colorful, and they weren’t the only thing to see. There are tiny fish living there, including the ones in this picture. Last week when I went to Flaming Geyser, I tried to get decent pictures of the fish, but I just wasn’t able. This time, I think I did better. There was also some rather interesting looking wood in the river, waterlogged and worn.
Lucas hung out in the river until he finally was too cold to stay any longer. Not a bad idea on a warm day like today.
When he was finally ready to leave, we headed home. On the way, I stopped once I had a clear view of my “pet rock” and decided to take a picture for everyone else to enjoy. So, in the spirit of sharing, here she is…
Those clouds are quite welcome by the way. It means that the next couple of days will be somewhat cooler than today was. I’m looking forward to it.
So anyway, despite the false advertising on the part of the state, I had a good time. But isn’t it just like the government to mislead its citizens? Hmph!
