For those we lost, We will not forget 09/11/2001 “Our God given unalienable rights are given to us all as individuals. They tell us what we may do for ourselves, and they are the embodiment of liberty. The so-called rights that government gives to some of us are parcelled out to select groups as classes. They tell us what one class of people may require another to do for them, and they are the very essence of slavery.”

Looking for a job?

Published Fri, Feb 12 2010 6:59 PM

My friend Karma forwarded this to me. While I have nothing against free trade, this is a fairly populist notion of why there are so few jobs available. The real problem is that the business climate in this country is pathetic. With financial markets under attack by the current Congress and administration, and uncertainty about taxes, fees, and the government mandates regarding health care, it’s just too hard to know whether it will be a good economic bargain to hire people.

But I figure we can all use a bit of humor.

Looking for a job?

Tony started the day early, having set his alarm clock (made in Japan) for 6:00 AM. While his coffeepot (made in China) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (made in Hong Kong).

He put on a dress shirt (made in Sri Lanka), designer jeans (made in Singapore), and tennis shoes (made in Korea).

After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (made in India) he sat down with his calculator (made in Mexico) to see how much he could spend today.

After setting his watch (made in Taiwan) to the radio (made in India) he got in his car (made in Germany), filled it with gas (from Saudi Arabia) and continued his search for a good-paying American job.

At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day checking his computer (made in Malaysia) he decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (made in Brazil), poured himself a glass of wine (made in France), and turned on his T.V. (made in Indonesia). Then he sat there wondering why he can't find a good-paying job in America.

Now he's hoping he can get help from his President (made in Kenya).

Well... I found it funny anyway.

Rather black humor. Jerry Pournelle suggests that two things would turn the jobs market around rather handily (though any meausres would take time):

A 10% across-the-board tarrif on all goods imported and

A rationaization of the crippling regulations under which American business operates.

I'd suggest a third, and even more powerful, step: The FairTax.

I've always made a real effort to buy American. There is a website which lists places that cater to American made goods. But as the years went by it became harder and harder to purchase American. Perhaps your dark humor in the email is too close to accurate.

Buying American is getting harder and harder.

I am in full agreement with your opening paragraph. I guess this is too obvious for people to get.

Spot on this one is! I couldn't have said it better. Having been through the job search for most of last year. Laid off in February at an aircraft plant in Wichita. Hired on as an aircraft mechanic/crew chief at Edwards AFB in November. I got the tentative offer in July!

I still think Americans should help their fellow Americans by buying American made cars.

The whole concept of it can be made cheaper over there ultimately leads to a dead end.
